VPS was recently acquired by a private equity company: Investment partners. The CFO faced a new challenge in the wake of the acquisition: achieving growth targets for a new commercial product. VPS has been gathering all fuel quality test results since 1980. The acquisition served as an impetus to use this data in a commercial product based around a unique source of two million fuel samples.

This data can help shipping industry clients achieve measurable improvements in terms of fuel management. In practice, this will enable ships to refuel immediately on the basis of optimal cost, efficiency and environmental compliance information.

YER was engaged to help launch this new data product by preparing a new job profile: a key position within the organisation requiring knowledge of Data & Analytics in the shipping industry. A new colleague capable of communicating effectively with stakeholders at strategic, tactical and operational level.

Defining and preparing the new job profile. Determining VPS' needs. Assessing the labour market. Determining which competences will be relevant to the new position. 

In addition to relevant industry experience and an affinity for Data & Analytics, VPS needed a candidate that could communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at every level in order to identify client needs and translate these into a new product. In short: a key position requiring a high degree of autonomy and effective relationship management skills.

In order to ensure an optimal match, assessments were conducted to determine the candidates' academic skills. This process involved the deployment of a psychologist and role-play actor. The assessment consisted of: a personality and capacity test, an in-depth interview, a business case and role-playing exercise. Each of these instruments were crucial role in building a clear candidate profile.

YER filled the position of Data Analytics Business Development Manager within a short space of time despite the small number of potential candidates, helping the client to further its growth ambitions. A job and recruitment profile was prepared on the basis of the client's recruitment needs.

Transparent recommendations were then issued in the form of a short-list, featuring various candidates with the appropriate skills, experience and competences. The candidate best suited to VPS' needs was then selected through an assessment of soft and hard skills.
